During the Montana Muzzleloader Hunting Season, a muzzleloader must not be capable of being loaded from the breech of the barrel and may not be loaded with any pre-prepared paper or metallic cartridges; must be charged with black powder, pyrodex, or an equivalent; must be ignited by a percussion, flintlock, matchlock, or Wheelock mechanism; must be a minimum of .45 caliber; may have no more than two barrels; and must only use plain lead projectiles, not sabots or similar projectiles. Montana is the only state in the country that does not schedule a separate muzzleloader season.The following table is a brief summary of the majority of different licenses and permits that are available. Montana Muzzleloader Hunting Season Regulations
- A license provides an opportunity to “harvest” the species for which the license is valid.
- A permit does not allow a hunter to “harvest” the species for which the permit is valid. A permit must be used in conjunction with a license and the permit enhances a hunting opportunity.
- A Conservation License is a prerequisite for all resident and nonresident hunting, fishing and trapping licenses. It is included in the resident sportsman’s and nonresident combination license packages. See more information below.
- The Base Hunting License is an annual fee charged when a hunter purchases their first hunting license each year. It is included in the nonresident combination license packages. See more information below.
